Blog > DESIGN TRENDS HOMEBUYERS LOVE AND LOATHE IN 2024
In a recent survey conducted by Qualtrics for Redfin in April–May 2024, over 300 Redfin Premier agents shared insights into what luxury homebuyers are seeking—and avoiding—in today's market. Here’s a breakdown of the top features and trends driving the decisions of high-end buyers:
Top-Requested Bathroom and Kitchen Amenities: When it comes to must-have features, luxury buyers are clear on their preferences:
- Double sinks or vanities are at the top of the list, with 86% of agents reporting it as a common request.
- Close behind are granite or quartz countertops and kitchen islands, both highly sought-after by 85% of buyers.
- Other popular amenities include walk-in pantries (83%), high-end appliances (77%), and custom cabinets (53%).
Desirable Home Trends: In terms of overall home trends, luxury buyers favor:
- Open floor plans, identified by 83% of agents as very desirable.
- Alongside open layouts, granite or quartz countertops continue to be highly favored, with 51% of agents highlighting their appeal.
Outdoor Features: While indoor amenities dominate, outdoor spaces also play a crucial role:
- Landscaping tops the list with 69% of agents noting its importance to buyers.
- Indoor/outdoor living spaces follow closely at 58%, indicating a desire for seamless integration of indoor and outdoor environments.
Biggest Turnoffs: Conversely, certain features can deter luxury buyers:
- An outdated kitchen is the primary turnoff, dissuading 54% of buyers from making an offer.
- Other deal-breakers include lack of curb appeal (48%), outdated bathrooms (44%), and popcorn ceilings (40%).
Understanding these preferences and aversions can significantly impact a home’s marketability. Sellers can strategically focus on updating kitchens and bathrooms, enhancing curb appeal, and embracing open floor plans to attract luxury buyers effectively.
As housing prices reach new heights, meeting these preferences upfront can minimize market time and maximize returns, ensuring that properties stand out in a competitive market. For sellers aiming to optimize their home’s appeal, aligning with these current trends is essential.
